The DOGULEAN Planetarium 3.4.x
Stargazing
By Stargazing, I mean looking at the sky from a particular place
on the surface of a planet – at least, from a place of
altitude 0 – with "up" pointing away from the center of the
planet.
You can do this using some advanced features of the
Planetarium. ("Advanced" just means that you have to click some of
the "+" buttons on the Control Panel to see those controls.
It does not mean that they are hard to understand or use.)
- Select a home planet and set Altitude to 0.
-
Click the "+" beside "Location". You can set
your position on the planet in one of two ways:
- Set longitude and latitude using the sliders and number boxes.
- If your Home Planet is Earth, the "Set from GPS" button will
appear. If you press that, the Planetarium with request
location information from your browser. THE FIRST TIME
YOU DO THIS, YOU WILL BE ASKED TO GRANT PERMISSION.
You can now click the "−" button beside "Location" to
close advanced features.
- Open the advanced controls for View.
- Click the "Can Roll" button at the bottom right the View
section so it says "No Roll".
- Set the view direction so you can see the sky.
- From now on, you can set the direction you are looking by
left-dragging on the sky. You can now close the advanced features
of View.
- You will not be able to look past the zenith, the point
directly overhead. To look further, you need to drag
horizontally to, in effect, turn around.
Notes about "No Roll":
- If Altitude reaches 0.2 or more, the "No Roll"
button will disappear and roll will automatically be enabled.
-
If "No Roll", tracking will not keep the orientation of the
thing tracked constant. For example, if you are tracking the
stars, the point at the center of the Planetarium window will stay
there, but the rest of the sky will revolve around it.
-
Tracking a planet will not work properly unless the planet is at
the center of the Planetarium window. To get it there, Track
the planet and then View it.
